Kijana 2026: More Students, New Milestones, and One Big Mission

As we step into 2026, the air at Kijana is filled with more than just New Year resolutions—it’s filled with the spirit of discovery. This year is already shaping up to be a milestone chapter defined by rapid growth, environmental advocacy, and lessons that extend far beyond the four walls of a classroom.

Lessons Written in the Water

On January 22nd, our Grade 4 and 5 students traded their desks for the banks of River Firatsi. This excursion launched our 2026 local learning trips, rooted in the belief that the most profound lessons often happen under the open sky.

The students didn’t just observe nature; they immersed themselves in it. They spent the morning identifying indigenous tree species and tracking the movements of dragonflies and local birds. However, the beauty of the river came with a sobering reality.

The students observed firsthand that the river water is currently unsafe for consumption, a direct result of human activities like upstream farming and the planting of thirsty, non-native eucalyptus trees.

Empowering the Next Generation of Conservationists

At Kijana, experiential learning is about more than just identifying problems; it’s about inspiring solutions. Armed with their classroom knowledge, these young learners engaged in a spirited onsite debate about environmental restoration.

The students advocated for planting bamboo to prevent soil erosion and mitigate climate change, returning to campus not just as students, but as passionate advocates for the rehabilitation of River Firatsi. This is the heart of our mission: fostering the kind of education that turns learners into responsible global citizens.

A Growing Community

Our community is expanding at an incredible pace. Since the previous school term concluded in November with 273 students, our family has grown to 315 learners.

Growth, however, requires movement—both literal and metaphorical. To keep pace with our students’ ambitions and ensure every child has access to these “living classroom” experiences, our infrastructure must evolve alongside them:

  • The Heart of Discovery: Our new Library and Media Center is entering its final stage of construction. Set to be completed this quarter, it will serve as the central hub for research, creativity, and digital literacy.

  • Expanding Our Reach: With our student body growing by leaps and bounds, the need for safe, reliable transportation has never been greater. To ensure all 315 learners can reach school safely and participate in outdoor excursions, we are prioritizing the addition of a new student vehicle to our fleet.

The Path Ahead

2026 is not just about expanding a school; it’s about building a launchpad for change. Every lesson on a riverbank and every book placed on a new library shelf is a step toward a brighter, more sustainable future for our students and their community.

We are moving forward with momentum, curiosity, and a commitment to the bright young minds leading the way.
